little bee

I picked up Little Bee by Chris Cleave a few months ago.  I bought it because I needed a book to read to kill some time before an event.  I'm not going to lie either.  It had a bright orange cover that I liked.

I was probably most intrigued by the back cover, though:  We don't want to tell you what happens in this book.  It is a truly special story and we don't want to spoil it.  Nevertheless, you need to know enough to buy it, so we'll say just this:  This is the story of two women.  Their lives collide one fateful day, and oen of them has to make a terrible choice, the kind of choice we hope you never have to face.  Two years later, they meet again - the story starts there . . . Once you have read it, you'll want to tell your friends about it.  When you do, please don't tell them what happens.  The magic is in how the story unfolds.

First, I give the publisher credit for an excellent marketing strategy.  I'm not so sure I'd describe anything in the book as magical.  I felt like it peaked a little too soon, but by the time I got to the end, I think I was a little bit stunned.  I can enjoy a book, but it's not too often that one touches me.
