Books are, in most cases, far superior to a movie adaptation. I can't think of a single movie, at least not before drinking my first cup of coffee this morning, that was better than the book. But...
I've been really disappointed with Julie and Julia. I loved the movie. I'm inspired to try out Julia Child's French cooking. (Are you reading, Mom? I really want that cookbook I put on my Christmas list!) But this book ... I don't know. I feel like I'm forcing it -- that I have this notion that I have to love every book I pick up. And maybe the problem is that Meryl Streep is a genius in all of her movies and that Amy Adams plays this sweet, earnest woman. In the book, there's very little Julia Child and more Julie Powell, and the Julie Powell in the book is not the same one played in the movie. I can't place my finger on it ... Maybe it's because the real Julie drops the f bomb in her book fairly often? And while I'm sure she's a sweet woman in life, there's just a disconnect between the book and the character on the screen -- so maybe she was portrayed inaccurately?
My recommendation? Rent or buy the movie when it comes out next month, and leave the book at the library.
