As CJ finishes up his last few days of undergrad (so proud of him!), I wanted to share two of my favorite stories from this semester -- they're tied together.
At the very beginning of the semester, one of his professors explained that he wouldn't count students absent if they were absent physically. But, if they came into class and their phone rang or they were caught texting, he would mark them down as being mentally absent, and they would lose points. To make sure this never happened to him, CJ always turned his phone on silent when he entered that class.
And it worked, up until just a few weeks ago.
I should back up and explain that the alarm on CJ's phone plays that Sugar Ray song -- not sure of the title, but the lyrics go something like: "Is she really going out with him?" I've pointed out that maybe this isn't so applicable to him and that maybe he should change this. He said the song was catchy and he didn't care.
You can tell where this is going.
A few weeks ago, CJ had his alarm set to ring at 1:30 pm. And of course, that's when he's in class. He forgot the alarm was on, and he also didn't know it would still go off when it was on silent. So there he was, in the middle of class, professor lecturing, when his phone started singing, "Is she really going out with him?" And then of course, the phone was at the bottom of his bag, so I'm pretty sure it made it through a few verses before he could turn it off. And that's how CJ earned his only mental absense of the semester.
