It was really a multi-person effort. One day my parents were down, so I put my dad to work taking it apart. It was in a bit rougher shape than I originally thought. (Stella didn't care though.)
CJ sanded it all down for me. I spray painted the metal. We honestly couldn't tell whether the wood was plastic or metal (because it was so cheap), but I took a chance and stained it anyway -- and it worked.
Rougly 4-6 months after our initial purchase, here's the final product:
